Buy or Rent a Bitcoin Miner? Find Your Path

By Lukas Henning · 03. August 2026 · 11 min read

Buy or rent a Bitcoin miner? Good news first: both paths lead to the same destination – real SHA-256 hashrate searching for the next block around the clock, for your own Bitcoin address. The question is not which path is “right”, but which one fits your situation: your time horizon, your living setup and your appetite for hands-on tech. That is exactly what this guide settles – with real prices from our shop and a six-question decision helper.

For context: we are talking about home and solo mining with open-source hardware such as the Bitaxe, NerdQaxe and NerdOctaxe – or rented hashrate in the same performance classes. For the industrial-scale alternative, see our comparison Hosting vs. Rental.

The short answer

  • Buying is your path if you are in it for the long run: from about year two onward, owning is the cheapest way to hold hashrate permanently – and the device keeps a resale value.
  • Renting is your path if you want to start right now: live in minutes, no purchase, no power or heat questions, with a live dashboard – from €5 per week.
  • The combo is the insider move: rent for a week to experience solo mining first, then buy the device that fits. Many of our customers do exactly that.

What “renting a Bitcoin miner” means here

When you rent a Bitcoin miner from us, you book real compute in a fixed size – say 1.2 TH/s, the level of a Bitaxe Gamma. That hashrate mines around the clock to your own Bitcoin address at a pool of your choice. If your virtual miner finds a block, the pool pays the reward – currently 3.125 BTC plus fees – directly to you. We are never in the payment path.

That is the fundamental difference to old-school “cloud mining”, where providers collected earnings and credited them in their own databases. Here you get verifiable compute on your own address: watch it live in your dashboard, cross-check it at the pool – and before you spend a cent, look at our open live demo of a real customer dashboard. That is exactly what you will get.

Where owning shines

  • Unbeatable long-term: a Bitaxe Gamma 601 costs €139 once and sips about 17 watts – roughly €4.30 of electricity per month at European rates. Nothing rented can match that over the years.
  • Ownership with resale value: open-source miners are in demand – a well-kept Bitaxe finds a new home quickly.
  • Full control and tinkering joy: frequency, voltage, cooling, firmware – with open AxeOS firmware, the device is truly yours. Overclocking is a feature here, not a warranty problem.
  • The physical experience: a quietly working miner on your shelf, taking part in the biggest compute network on earth every second – for many, that is half the fun.
  • Maximum independence: power in, WiFi connected, done. Nobody stands between you and the network.

What you bring in return: a spot with airflow, 15 minutes for the setup (our step-by-step guide walks you through), and a day of patience for shipping – in-stock devices leave us within 24 hours.

Where renting shines

  • Live in minutes: pick a plan, enter your Bitcoin address, pay – your hashrate is working before a parcel would even be packed. No account needed; pay with Lightning, Bitcoin or card.
  • Zero side effects: no power draw, no heat, no noise, no space. The hardware runs at our place – you get the output.
  • Zero hardware risk: device care, failures, replacements – our job. We meter every customer’s delivery ourselves and actively compensate fluctuations.
  • The perfect test: for €5 you experience a full week of real solo mining with a live dashboard – the best €5 of research before any hardware purchase.
  • Fits every living situation: rented flat, shared apartment, hot attic, sensitive ears – irrelevant. Your hashrate runs anyway, 24/7.
  • Scales on demand: 1.2 to 12 TH/s, from a taster week to a yearly plan with up to 40% off.

And because “do you really deliver?” is the right question to ask any provider: yes – and you do not have to take our word for it. Open the live demo, book, then verify the arriving hashrate independently at your pool. Verifiability is part of the product here.

The cost math: 1.2 TH/s bought vs. rented

Let us run the most popular duel – identical performance, European power prices (€0.35/kWh), our shop prices (as of August 2026):

  • Buy: Bitaxe Gamma 601 for €139 plus ~€4.30 of power per month → about €191 in year one, then only ~€52 per year – plus a device with resale value.
  • Rent, flexible: €5/week → about €21.70/month. The tester’s choice.
  • Rent, yearly plan: €157.50/year → €13.13/month, roughly 40% below the weekly rate – and slightly cheaper than buying in year one.

The rule of thumb that falls out: in year one both paths cost about the same – from year two, ownership pulls ahead. That is why we recommend renting to everyone who wants to start and test, and buying to everyone who knows they will stay. In the bigger classes, comfort shifts further toward renting: a NerdOctaxe with 12 TH/s is a glorious piece of hardware, but draws ~200 watts – about €50 of power per month plus noticeable heat. The same 12 TH/s rents for ~€102/month on the yearly plan, with none of that. Then again, after two or three years the buyer owns a machine that keeps mining while the rental simply ends. Adjust every assumption to your own power price in the mining calculator.

Transparency is part of the product here: solo mining – bought or rented – is a chance at the block, not a predictable yield. In return, a find pays 100% to you: currently 3.125 BTC plus fees, straight from the pool to your address. A year at 1.2 TH/s statistically equals almost ten national-lottery jackpot tickets – with a draw every ten minutes. The calculator shows your exact odds, unvarnished.

The performance classes at a glance – bought and rented

To make prices truly comparable, here are all four classes side by side – each exists as a device in the shop and as a rental plan, deliberately matched (prices as of August 2026):

  • Entry – 1.2 TH/s: Bitaxe Gamma 601 for €139 (~17 W) or the €5/week plan. The classic starter: whisper-quiet, frugal, iconic.
  • Solid middle – 2.15 TH/s: Bitaxe GT 801 for €249 or €8/week. Nearly double the odds at desk-lamp power draw.
  • The crowd favourite – 4.8 TH/s: NerdQaxe++ for €399 (~80 W, four BM1370 chips) or €17/week. The sweet spot of odds, price and liveability.
  • The flagship – 12 TH/s: NerdOctaxe for €899 (~200 W, eight chips) or €39/week. Ten Gamma odds – a statement as a device, carefree as a rental.

The matching is intentional: switch from a rental week to hardware (or the other way round) and you know exactly which class you are getting – no conversions, no surprises.

Your first day – how each path feels

First day renting: you pick a plan on the rental page, enter your Bitcoin address and pool, pay – with Lightning the whole flow takes under two minutes, no account required. Moments later your dashboard is live: allocated hashrate, first accepted shares, pool status. The special moment comes when you open your pool’s public stats and see your own address listed with real hashrate – you are a participant now, not a spectator.

First day owning: the parcel arrives (in-stock hardware ships within 24 hours), you unbox a surprisingly small, cleanly built piece of open-source engineering. Power in, join the setup WiFi, enter pool and address in AxeOS – our guide takes 15 minutes. Then the moment that hooks people: the first accepted share on your own display. From there the device just runs – quiet, warm, relentless, 144 draws a day.

Three real-world scenarios

  • The student in a dorm: no space, shared power bill, zero appetite for debates. She rents 1.2 TH/s on the yearly plan for €157.50 – her mining runs entirely on our side, the dashboard on her phone. Full participation, zero footprint.
  • The tech dad: wants to show his kids how Bitcoin actually works – hands-on. A NerdQaxe++ for the shelf (€399, living-room quiet) plus occasional rental boosts. The device is teaching aid, conversation starter and lottery ticket in one.
  • The halving strategist: wants maximum tickets in the 3.125-BTC era until April 2028. Instead of locking €899 into hardware, he runs 12 TH/s on the yearly plan at ~€102/month – cancellable if life changes, upgradable if not.

Decision helper: six questions

  • Want to be mining ten minutes from now?Rent. No faster entry exists.
  • Planning beyond eighteen months? → Buy – ownership wins the math from there, plus resale value.
  • Sensitive living situation (heat, flatmates, landlord)? → Rent, or go whisper-quiet with a Gamma. Details in mining without your own power hookup.
  • Love hands-on tech – flashing, tuning, optimizing? → Buy. Open hardware is your playground.
  • Want to feel it before committing? → Rent a week, watch the dashboard, then decide.
  • Tempted by both? → Combo strategy: rent now, browse the miner comparison in parallel.

The combo strategy: how insiders do it

The smartest answer to “buy or rent?” is often: rent first, buy second – then run both. The €5 taster week shows you the full experience: shares stacking up, your address in the pool stats, the quiet thrill each time the network finds a new block. After that you are not buying blind – you are buying exactly the class that fits, because the rental plans deliberately mirror our devices from Gamma to NerdOctaxe.

Even as a device owner, the rental stays useful: as an instant boost when you want more tickets, as a bridge while your favourite device is being restocked (our restock alert tells insiders first), or as a gift – a week of “your own Bitcoin miner” is the most original Bitcoin present under €10. And mind the era: the 3.125-BTC block reward runs until the next halving around April 2028. There has rarely been a better-defined moment to join.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get the same block odds renting as owning? Exactly the same. Odds depend on hashrate alone: 1.2 TH/s is 1.2 TH/s – on your desk or in our fleet. The pool sees your address; a found block is entirely yours.

What if a device fails on your side? Ideally you never notice: our fleet consists of multiple machines, allocation rebalances automatically, and we meter every customer’s delivery with our own measurements. Hardware stress is our half of the deal.

Can I switch from renting to owning without losing anything? Any time. The rental simply runs out its booked term while you set up your new device – 15 minutes with our setup guide. Many keep both: device as the base, rental as the flexible booster.

Can bought and rented hashrate mine to the same address? Yes – and it is the most elegant setup: enter the same Bitcoin address everywhere and both feed one “ticket account”. The pool shows the sum; if a block hits, it does not matter which of your terahashes found it.

How fast am I live after booking a rental? Usually within minutes of payment – you get a mail the moment your virtual miner is switched on, and the first accepted shares appear right in the dashboard. With Lightning, the whole journey is often shorter than brewing a coffee.

Why do you offer both paths? Because both are good – for different moments. We would rather earn from customers who start the right way and stay excited than from mis-purchases. Hence a guide instead of a one-way street.

Bottom line: two good doors, one arena

Buy if you are staying: cheapest from year two, true ownership, full control. Rent if you are starting: live in minutes, zero side effects, verifiable delivery from €5/week. And combine both if you want it all. Pick your door: rent hashrate · browse the miners · run your numbers. Welcome to the most exciting lottery on earth – whichever way you walk in.
