Hashrate in TH/s is how many attempts a device makes per second, watts set the power bill, and J/TH relates the two. What separates the devices is mainly the number of chips and their generation. One BM1370 sits in the Bitaxe Gamma 601 and the Nerdaxe Gamma, four in the NerdQaxe ++, six in the Bitaxe Gamma Hex 1300, eight in the NerdOctaxe and in the NerdOctaxe Hydro. The Nerdaxe Gaia models use the newer BM1373 and reach around 10 to 11 J/TH, the Bitaxe Supra Hex 702 with six older BM1368 around 21. The Avalon Nano 3S hashes with Canaan chips (around 21 to 23 J/TH). How the two multi-chip Nerd models compare in detail is covered in NerdQaxe ++ vs. NerdOctaxe.
Power and heat
The monthly column assumes 30 cents per kWh; enter your own price in the mining calculator. What works with solar power and how much heat the devices give off is answered in the questions below.
Firmware: AxeOS, NerdOS and one exception
Bitaxe devices run AxeOS; Nerdaxe, NerdQaxe and NerdOctaxe run NerdOS, an open offshoot of AxeOS. In both you set pool, frequency and voltage yourself, in the browser and without a manufacturer account. The exception is the Avalon Nano 3S with the closed firmware from Canaan. You install AxeOS and NerdOS updates via the dashboard or with our web flasher.
Tuning and cooling
Raising frequency and voltage calls for cooling headroom. For the NerdQaxe ++ and NerdOctaxe there is the larger AXP90 Copper Pro, and the Performance Case gives the NerdQaxe more airflow. The AXP60 Copper Pro copper cooler fits the Bitaxe Gamma and Nerdaxe Gaia but not the Nerdaxe Gamma; for the Bitaxe and Nerdaxe Gamma there is the ICE Tower Low Profile Kit.
