With home mining you run a small ASIC miner at home and actively take part in the Bitcoin network. It is less about sure profit than about decentralization, learning and the appeal of finding a whole block with some luck. With modern open-source hardware this is now quiet, economical and set up in minutes – entirely without industrial noise.

How does home mining work?

Your miner connects via WLAN to a mining pool and contributes its computing power to the search for the next Bitcoin block. Through the AxeOS dashboard you see hashrate, temperature and accepted shares in real time. You decide yourself whether to go solo for the whole block or prefer regular mini payouts in a pool.

What you need for home mining

  • An open-source miner (Bitaxe, NerdQaxe or NerdOctaxe).
  • WLAN (2.4 GHz) and a power socket – nothing more.
  • Your own Bitcoin address and a pool you enter in AxeOS.
  • Optional: a cooling upgrade for stable continuous operation.

The complete introduction is in our guide Bitcoin mining at home – the big guide, the setup step by step in Setting up a Bitaxe & NerdQaxe.

How loud is home mining in the living room?

A single Bitaxe is whisper-quiet and does not disturb on the desk. The more ASICs a device has, the more cooling and thus fan noise: the NerdQaxe ++ stays well within the living space with quiet ventilation, the NerdOctaxe belongs more in the office. A spot with good air circulation helps in any case.

What does home mining cost?

A small Bitaxe costs only a few euros of electricity per month – larger devices accordingly more. How to calculate that exactly is shown in Calculating electricity costs; for the honest question of returns see Calculating profitability realistically. A nice side effect: the waste heat helps heat in winter.

Frequently asked questions

Is home mining loud?
A Bitaxe is very quiet and living-room friendly. Larger devices like the NerdOctaxe are audible and need active cooling – better placed in the office.
How much electricity does home mining use?
A Bitaxe draws around 15 watts (about €3–4 per month at 30 ct/kWh), a NerdQaxe ++ about 80 watts, a NerdOctaxe around 200 watts. The exact formula is in our guide.
Is home mining financially worth it?
As a single device, more of a hobby. Solo mining is a lottery for the whole block; in a pool there are small, regular payouts that for tiny devices are often below the electricity costs.
Do I need technical knowledge for home mining?
No. You only need WLAN, a power socket and a Bitcoin address. Setup in AxeOS takes a few minutes and is explained step by step in our guides.
Is home mining legal in Germany?
Yes, private Bitcoin mining is legal in Germany and the EU. Just note that earnings can be tax-relevant – when in doubt, clarify with a tax advisor.
